Most Canadian hosting providers look a lot like their American counterparts: introductory prices that quadruple at renewal, green credentials that amount to buying certificates, and data centres that could be anywhere. CanSpace is built on three specific rejections of that model. Prices don’t increase at renewal. Power comes directly from a hydroelectric dam 300 metres from the server room. And all data stays in Canada.

About CanSpace

CanSpace Solutions has been providing enterprise-level hosting since 2005. The company is 100% Canadian owned and operated, with head office, servers, staff, and billing all based in Canada. It’s incorporated in Mississauga, Ontario, and is a CIRA-certified .ca domain registrar, which means it’s accredited annually by the Government of Canada for .ca domain management.

The client list tells you something about where CanSpace sits in the market. The City of Toronto, City of Vancouver, City of Calgary, Legislative Assembly of Alberta, TVO, BC Pension Corporation, Canadian Cancer Society, and Hyundai Capital Canada all host with CanSpace. That’s a roster of public sector and enterprise organisations with strict data residency and uptime requirements. For a company with no US parent and no private equity ownership, it’s an unusual level of institutional trust.

40,000+ businesses are hosted across the platform. CanSpace sponsored WordCamp Canada 2026, which signals genuine investment in the Canadian WordPress community rather than just marketing.

All prices are in Canadian dollars. The review uses the CA$ prefix throughout to distinguish from USD.

Shared Hosting

Three plans: Starter, Medium, and Professional. All use cPanel. All include free site migration, free SSL, DDoS protection, Softaculous one-click installation for 400+ apps, SiteJet AI website builder, WordPress-optimised servers with PHP 7.x to 8.x, and a 30-day money-back guarantee.

The plan differences matter more than usual here, so it’s worth being specific about what each tier actually includes before looking at the pricing.

Starter gives you 5GB SSD storage and 15GB monthly bandwidth. That bandwidth limit is genuinely restrictive. A basic WordPress site with images can use 2-5GB per month, so 15GB leaves limited room for real traffic. Starter suits a personal page or placeholder site, not a business website with regular visitors. Nightly backups are an add-on on this plan rather than included. No Cloudflare CDN, no WAF, no Git, SSH, or Node.js.

Medium is the plan most readers should look at first. 50GB SSD, unlimited bandwidth, unlimited domains, unlimited email, Cloudflare CDN, Git/SSH/Node.js access, WAF, and nightly backups included. CloudLinux account isolation keeps your site’s resources protected regardless of what other accounts on the server are doing. This is the most popular plan and the one CanSpace highlights on the homepage.

Professional adds unlimited Enhanced SSL certificates (useful for agencies managing multiple client sites), a dedicated support representative, monthly security audits, and multi-user team access. It’s aimed at agencies and e-commerce businesses with more demanding security requirements.

Plan Storage Bandwidth Domains Email WAF Price/mo (3yr)
Starter 5GB SSD 15GB 5 10 No CA$4.99
Medium 50GB SSD Unlimited Unlimited Unlimited Yes CA$9.99
Professional 200GB SSD Unlimited Unlimited Unlimited Yes CA$22.99

All prices in Canadian dollars, 3-year term. Billing cycles run from monthly through to 3-year. Free domain included on annual and longer terms. At current exchange rates, CA$9.99 is approximately US$7.30, worth knowing for international readers comparing prices.

The Price-Lock Guarantee

This is the editorial centrepiece of any CanSpace review, and it deserves to be treated as such.

CanSpace’s published commitment is plain: the price you sign up at is the price you pay at renewal. No increases. No introductory period that quietly expires. Their own pricing comparison page shows what this looks like against alternatives: GoDaddy goes from US$7.99 to US$13.99 at renewal (+75%). Bluehost goes from US$4.99 to US$15.99 (+220%). HostPapa goes from CA$14.95 to CA$27.99 (+87%). CanSpace Medium stays at CA$9.99.

Hosting prices haven’t increased at CanSpace in nearly a decade. The one exception was December 2021, when the company raised prices for the first time in ten years, citing cPanel’s price increase of over 1,000% in 2020. Their public announcement at the time explained the decision in detail rather than just changing the numbers quietly. That’s a meaningful track record even allowing for the one adjustment.

For anyone who’s ever been caught by a renewal invoice that was three times what they expected, this is the most practically significant feature CanSpace offers.

Green Credentials

CanSpace’s green story is better than most hosting providers’, and for a specific reason: it’s not based on certificates.

All servers run on power sourced directly from the Beauharnois hydroelectric generating station in Quebec, approximately 300 metres from the data centre. The facility is also cooled directly by the hydro dam, which means no air conditioning is needed. The published Power Usage Effectiveness (PUE) is under 1.1, which is exceptional. A PUE of 1.0 would mean every watt of power drawn goes directly to computing. Most data centres operate between 1.2 and 1.6.

Beauharnois is one of the world’s largest hydroelectric plants, with a generation capacity of 2,596 MW. This is direct renewable sourcing, not the offset model used by most green hosting providers. There’s no purchasing of Renewable Energy Certificates to compensate for fossil fuel consumption elsewhere. The servers are drawing power from a river.

CanSpace was not listed as a verified provider in the Green Web Foundation dataset at the time of writing. The GWF verifies green credentials independently and their dataset is queried millions of times daily. Not appearing in it doesn’t contradict CanSpace’s own claims, but it does mean those claims haven’t been independently audited. For context on what green credentials mean across the hosting industry, the TSH guide on sustainable hosting covers the difference between direct renewable sourcing and offset models.

Data Centre

The primary data centre is in Beauharnois, Quebec. It’s a third-party colocation facility established in 2012, operating at what the operator describes as tier four-quality standard, housing approximately 30,000 servers with a combined throughput of 1 terabyte per second. CanSpace hasn’t published third-party certifications such as ISO 27001 or Uptime Institute ratings for the facility.

All data stays in Canada and never crosses the border. PIPEDA compliance is built into the infrastructure by default rather than being a configuration option. For Canadian businesses with data residency requirements, this removes the compliance complexity that comes with US-based or multi-jurisdiction hosting.

One thing worth noting for transparency: previous reviews of CanSpace criticised the company for being vague about its data centre location. The Beauharnois facility location is confirmed from CanSpace’s own blog and FAQ pages, so that criticism is outdated. The server room is in Quebec, powered by a dam 300 metres away.

WordPress Hosting

CanSpace markets a separate WordPress hosting product, but it runs on the same shared hosting infrastructure as the standard plans. The pricing, plan names, and specifications are identical. If you’re buying WordPress hosting from CanSpace, you’re buying shared hosting with WordPress installable via Softaculous.

That’s not a criticism. The stack is genuinely well-suited to WordPress: PHP 8.x, Nginx caching, PHP OPcache, Cloudflare CDN on Medium and above, and one-click installation via Softaculous. The Platform handles WordPress sites well. What it doesn’t offer is managed WordPress in the sense of automated updates, staging environments, security patching, or a dedicated WordPress-specific dashboard. If those features are priorities, CanSpace doesn’t currently offer them.

The SiteJet AI website builder is also available as an alternative to WordPress on all plans. It’s a drag-and-drop builder with 170+ templates and AI-generated content. For a small business that wants a five-page site online quickly without managing a WordPress installation, it’s a practical option built into the control panel.

VPS Hosting

CanSpace names its VPS plans after Canada’s Great Lakes. Four tiers from Ontario to Superior, all fully managed, all in Canada, all priced in CAD.

The managed aspect is the key differentiator. CanSpace handles backups, security hardening, software updates, firewall configuration, monitoring, and maintenance. Root access is still included, so you can customise the server if you need to, but you’re not responsible for keeping it secure and updated. Every server is manually provisioned, updated to the latest software versions, security patched, and put through a two-hour performance test before handover. Provisioning takes two to four hours typically.

All plans run on AMD EPYC or Intel Xeon processors with NVMe SSD storage. cPanel and WHM come pre-installed on AlmaLinux with Apache, MySQL, multiple PHP versions, CSF firewall, LFD, and a WAF pre-configured. cPanel is an optional add-on rather than included in the base price. Licensing starts at CA$24.99/mo for a single-account Solo licence and scales through to CA$79.99/mo for up to 100 accounts. If you want a bare Linux VPS without cPanel, that’s available, but the fully managed service only applies to cPanel installations. Without cPanel, the VPS is self-managed.

Windows Server is available on any plan. Windows VPS plans are self-managed.

Plan CPU RAM Storage Port Backup space Price/mo
VPS-Ontario-A 4 cores 8GB 75GB NVMe 400 Mbps — CA$59.99
VPS-Erie-A 6 cores 12GB 100GB NVMe 1 Gbps 50GB CA$74.99
VPS-Huron-A 8 cores 24GB 200GB NVMe 1.5 Gbps 100GB CA$99.99
VPS-Superior-A 24 cores 96GB 400GB NVMe 3 Gbps 200GB CA$184.99

All plans: unlimited bandwidth, DDoS protection, free migration from another host, nightly off-site backups, OS reinstall on request, free SSL, clean Canadian IP addresses. Resources can be scaled up in as little as 30 seconds via support ticket, no migration needed. Price-lock applies here too: VPS renewal prices match the signup price.

No remote backup space on the Ontario plan is a notable limitation for the entry tier. Erie and above include off-site backup storage from 50GB to 200GB. If nightly backups are a requirement, budget for at least the Erie plan.

Dedicated servers are also available from CA$99.99/mo for workloads that exceed what a VPS can handle. All dedicated servers are fully managed and located in Canada.

Dedicated Servers

For workloads that need an entire physical machine, CanSpace offers four dedicated server tiers named after Canadian rivers. All are fully managed, Intel Xeon, RAID-1 redundant storage, ECC RAM, unlimited bandwidth, and located in Canada.

Plan CPU RAM Storage Price/mo
Dedi-Fraser-A Intel Xeon 4c/8t 32GB DDR3 2x2TB HDD or 2x480GB SSD (RAID-1) CA$99.99
Dedi-Columbia-A Intel Xeon 6c/12t 64GB DDR4 2x4TB HDD or 2x512GB SSD (RAID-1) CA$199.99
Dedi-Yukon-A Intel Xeon 8c/16t 128GB DDR4 2x4TB HDD or 2x512GB SSD (RAID-1) CA$269.99
Dedi-Ottawa-A Dual Intel Xeon 24c/48t 192GB DDR4 3x4TB HDD or 2x1TB NVMe (RAID-1) CA$449.99

The Fraser entry tier uses DDR3 memory rather than the DDR4 found on all other tiers. At CA$99.99/mo it’s still competitive for a fully managed dedicated server in Canada, but worth knowing before ordering. All other tiers use DDR4. Price-lock applies here too.

Domains

CanSpace claims the lowest .ca domain prices in Canada, a specific and verifiable claim they back with a price-lock guarantee on domains as well as hosting. As a CIRA-certified registrar, .ca domain registration goes through CanSpace’s own accreditation rather than a third-party intermediary. CIRA recertification is required annually from the Government of Canada.

.com, .net, .org, and hundreds of other TLDs are also available. All in Canadian dollars, with no currency conversion fees. Free domain registration or transfer is included with annual and longer hosting terms.

DNS management, WHOIS privacy, domain forwarding, and DNSSEC support are all handled through the client portal. One negative review on Trustpilot mentioned that DNSSEC and glue record management used to require contacting support rather than being self-service. CanSpace’s own response to that review confirmed they’ve since added self-service management for both.

Support

24/7 phone, ticket, and live chat support. CanSpace publishes a 15-minute average response time on the homepage, and independent hosting reviews consistently confirm responses coming in under 10 minutes and often under 5. Tickets are answered by named technicians rather than rotating agents, which shows up specifically in customer reviews as a trust signal.

The support scope is notably broad. Customer reviews describe CanSpace technicians handling complex non-cPanel migrations, removing malware from hacked WordPress installations, fixing broken sites inherited from previous hosts, and completing same-day migrations for accounts with 15+ email users. That level of support investment at this price point is uncommon.

Trustpilot shows 4.3 out of 5 from 43 reviews. The sample is small but the reviews are substantive. SmartCustomer shows 4.5 from 52 reviews. HostAdvice shows consistent positive sentiment across 47 reviews with no significant recurring negative themes beyond the now-resolved DNSSEC management issue.

Who Should Use CanSpace?

The obvious fit is a Canadian individual or business that wants data in Canada, PIPEDA compliance by default, CAD billing with no currency conversion, price stability at renewal, and hydroelectric green hosting. That’s a precise description of what CanSpace offers and the review has covered all of it. But it’s worth being specific about who it suits within that definition.

The government and enterprise client list signals that CanSpace handles compliance-sensitive workloads: public sector contracts, regulated industries, organisations with data residency requirements. If your organisation has been evaluating hosting on the basis of where data lives and who has legal access to it, the Canadian jurisdiction combined with no US parent company matters.

For small businesses and individuals who’ve been burned by renewal price increases at US-based hosts, the price-lock model is the practical differentiator. You’re not getting a better deal per gigabyte than some international alternatives. You’re getting a deal that doesn’t change on you.

The Medium plan at CA$9.99/mo is where most readers should start. Starter’s 15GB bandwidth cap is too tight for anything beyond a minimal personal site, and the lack of WAF and Cloudflare on that tier leaves gaps that Medium fills. The jump from Medium to Professional at CA$22.99/mo is steep and only makes sense for agencies managing multiple client sites with elevated security requirements.

CanSpace is not the right choice if you need Windows hosting (not offered). It’s also not built for anyone who wants managed WordPress with staging, automated security patching, or a dedicated WordPress management interface. And if you’re outside Canada with no specific data residency requirement, you’ll pay a CAD-to-local-currency conversion fee and won’t benefit from the PIPEDA compliance angle. For those use cases, other reviewed Canadian and international alternatives are worth comparing first.

Common Questions About CanSpace

Where are CanSpace’s servers located? All servers are located in Canada. The primary data centre is in Beauharnois, Quebec, approximately 300 metres from the Beauharnois hydroelectric generating station that powers it. Data never crosses the Canadian border and is subject only to Canadian privacy law (PIPEDA).

Does CanSpace increase prices at renewal? No. CanSpace operates a price-lock guarantee: the price you sign up at is the price you pay at renewal. This is explicitly confirmed on their pricing page and about page. Prices have increased only once in the company’s history, in December 2021, due to a cPanel licensing cost increase of over 1,000%.

Does CanSpace use cPanel? Yes. cPanel is the control panel on all shared hosting plans, with all features enabled including backup and transfer tools. No features are restricted or locked behind support tickets.

Is CanSpace good for WordPress hosting? For standard WordPress installations, yes. PHP 8.x, Nginx caching, PHP OPcache, Cloudflare CDN on Medium and above, and one-click Softaculous installation cover the basics well. CanSpace doesn’t offer managed WordPress with staging or automated patching. For those features, you’d need to look at other providers.

Does CanSpace offer a money-back guarantee? Yes. All shared hosting and reseller plans include a 30-day money-back guarantee. No questions asked. Domain registration fees are excluded from refunds as they’re processed as registry-level transactions.

Final Verdict

CanSpace does a small number of things that most hosting providers don’t. Prices don’t increase at renewal. Power comes directly from a hydroelectric dam, not from certificates. Data stays in Canada, subject only to Canadian law. The client list includes government and enterprise organisations that have done their own due diligence.

The limitations are real too. Starter plan is too restrictive for practical use. No managed WordPress. No Windows hosting. CAD billing is an advantage for Canadian customers and a friction point for everyone else.

For a Canadian business or individual who wants pricing clarity, data sovereignty, and a green hosting story that doesn’t rely on purchasing offsets, CanSpace is a strong choice. The Medium plan at CA$9.99/mo with the price-lock behind it is the one to start with.
