IONOS is one of those hosting companies that most people have encountered at some point, even if they do not immediately recognise the name. Formerly known as 1&1, the company has been around since 1988 and has quietly built itself into one of the largest web hosting providers in the world. With over 90,000 servers, 10 data centres, more than 8 million customer contracts, and a market share that puts it ahead of nearly everyone except AWS and GoDaddy, IONOS is not a small player trying to compete with the big names. It is one of the big names.

As someone who actually uses IONOS for several of my own projects, I have been through the full experience. The signup, the control panel, the performance, the support, and yes, the deeply frustrating cancellation process. This review is based on real, hands on use rather than a quick test site spun up for a week. I will cover what IONOS does well, where it genuinely frustrates, and who should and should not consider it for their next hosting project.

Company Background

IONOS has its roots in 1&1, a company founded by Ralph Dommermuth in Germany in 1988. It started as an internet service provider during the earliest days of commercial web hosting and grew rapidly through the 1990s and 2000s, becoming the largest hosting provider in Germany and one of the largest in Europe.

In 2003, 1&1 expanded into the US market, setting up operations in Chesterbrook, Pennsylvania and commissioning a massive data centre in Lenexa, Kansas housing over 40,000 servers. By the mid 2000s, the company had established itself as a top ten hosting provider in the United States.

The modern IONOS brand emerged in 2018 when 1&1 merged with ProfitBricks, a cloud infrastructure company founded by former 1&1 CTO Achim Weiss. The combined entity rebranded as 1&1 IONOS, later simplified to just IONOS. Weiss became CEO and has led the company since, overseeing its IPO on the Frankfurt Stock Exchange in February 2023.

IONOS is part of the United Internet Group, a publicly traded German conglomerate that also owns brands like Strato, Fasthosts, GMX, WEB.DE, and the 1&1 telecommunications business. This corporate backing gives IONOS significant financial stability and infrastructure resources that smaller hosting companies simply cannot match.

The company operates in over ten countries across Europe and North America, with more than 2,000 employees. It positions itself primarily as a digitalization partner for small and medium sized businesses, offering everything from domains and shared hosting to dedicated servers, cloud infrastructure, and managed Kubernetes.

Green Credentials

IONOS runs all of its proprietary data centres in Europe and North America on 100% renewable electricity. In Germany and the UK, power comes directly from renewable sources, while the US data centre in Lenexa, Kansas runs entirely on wind energy supplied by Evergy. Where renewable supply is not available, such as diesel backup generators, the company offsets its carbon output.

IONOS green credentials

Its energy management systems are ISO 50001 certified, and IONOS has published a Climate Strategy 2030 targeting a 55% reduction in data centre emissions compared to 2019 levels. The company also recycled over 124 tonnes of server hardware in 2022, cutting an estimated 269 tonnes of CO2. For site owners who care about the environmental footprint of their hosting, IONOS is one of the few major providers making verifiable commitments rather than relying on vague green marketing.

Hosting Plans and Pricing

IONOS offers a broad range of hosting products. The shared hosting lineup is where most people start, and it is competitively priced with some genuinely useful features included at every tier.

Shared Hosting

IONOS currently offers four shared hosting plans. All plans include a free domain for the first year, a free Wildcard SSL certificate, professional email, unmetered bandwidth, daily backups, one click app installers, and 24/7 support. Here is how they break down:

Essential: from $4/month

  • 1 website
  • 10 GB redundant storage
  • 10 databases
  • Initial CPU and memory resources
  • Free domain for 1 year
  • Wildcard SSL
  • 1 professional email account
  • Daily backups

The Essential plan is the entry point. It is designed for a single small website and comes with enough resources for a personal blog, portfolio, or basic business page. The 10 GB storage is modest but sufficient for most small sites.

Starter: from $5/month

  • 1 website
  • 50 GB redundant storage
  • 25 databases
  • Enhanced CPU and memory
  • Everything in Essential plus more storage and database capacity

The Starter plan bumps up the storage and databases significantly while keeping the price reasonable. It is a better fit if you plan to grow your site beyond basic content.

Plus: from $1/month (promotional), renews at approximately $14/month

  • Unlimited websites
  • 250 GB redundant storage
  • Unlimited databases
  • Increased CPU and memory resources
  • CDN integration
  • Site analytics
  • Everything in Starter

The Plus plan is IONOS’s best seller and for good reason. The promotional price is aggressively low, and even at the renewal rate it offers solid value with unlimited websites, a CDN, and 250 GB of storage. This is the plan I would recommend for most users who want room to grow without committing to VPS level pricing.

Ultimate: from $10/month

  • Unlimited websites
  • Unlimited redundant storage
  • Unlimited databases
  • Maximum CPU and memory resources
  • CDN integration
  • Site analytics
  • Site Scan malware protection
  • Everything in Plus with maximum resources

The Ultimate plan is the top shared hosting tier and adds unlimited storage, maximum server resources, and the Site Scan security tool. It makes sense for users running multiple sites or resource heavier applications who want to stay on shared hosting rather than stepping up to VPS.

WordPress Hosting

IONOS offers both unmanaged and managed WordPress plans that are essentially structured the same as their shared hosting but with WordPress specific optimisations. Plans range from about $5 to $12 per month on longer terms. Features include one click WordPress setup, automatic updates, a staging environment on higher plans, and Cloudflare Railgun CDN integration that IONOS claims delivers performance improvements of up to 200%.

The managed WordPress plans include the WordPress Cockpit, which is a dashboard layer that sits on top of IONOS’s standard control panel and provides WordPress specific management, security scanning, and performance monitoring. There is also an AI website builder integrated for users who want to generate a starting point for their site.

VPS Hosting

IONOS VPS plans are managed and run on VMware virtualisation with dedicated SSD storage. You get full root access, a choice of Linux or Windows, and optional Plesk licensing. Plans start at approximately $2/month for the smallest Linux VPS configuration.

VPS data centre locations include the US (Las Vegas, Newark, Lenexa), Germany (Frankfurt, Berlin), UK (London, Worcester), Spain (Logroño), and France (Paris). This is broader geographic coverage than many competitors at this price point.

Dedicated Servers

IONOS has an extensive dedicated server lineup covering AMD and Intel configurations, storage focused servers, and GPU servers. Dedicated plans start at around $41/month for a 4 core Intel Xeon with 16 GB RAM and 1 TB HDD storage, though there is a one time $50 setup fee on many configurations.

Higher end configurations offer AMD EPYC processors, up to 256 GB RAM, and NVMe storage. All dedicated servers include free SSL, anti phishing, anti spam, and firewall management.

Cloud Hosting

The IONOS Compute Engine is a full IaaS platform where you can build custom virtual data centres using a visual Data Center Designer (DCD). You drag and drop servers, storage, networking, and load balancers onto a whiteboard and provision them on demand. Pricing starts from $0.0056 per hour with a $4 monthly cap for the smallest instances.

This is the ProfitBricks DNA showing through. The cloud platform is significantly more capable than what most shared hosting customers will ever need, but it gives IONOS a genuine enterprise tier for customers who outgrow simpler products.

The Renewal Price Issue

Like most large hosting providers, IONOS relies on steep introductory discounts to attract new customers. The Plus plan at $1/month for the first year is eye catching, but the renewal price of roughly $10/month is a significant jump. The gap between promotional and regular pricing is not as extreme as Hostinger’s 3.5x to 5x multiplier, but it is still substantial enough that you should budget for the real price from day one.

On the positive side, IONOS only requires a 12 month initial commitment for promotional pricing. Competitors like Hostinger push 48 month terms for their best rates. A one year commitment is far more reasonable and means less financial risk if the service does not meet your expectations.

IONOS also includes a 30 day money back guarantee across all shared and WordPress hosting plans.

Performance and Uptime

IONOS positions itself with a 99.99% uptime guarantee on its infrastructure, which is more aggressive than the industry standard 99.9%. In practice, uptime has been strong. Independent testing has recorded near perfect availability during multi week monitoring periods, and the georedundant storage architecture (your data is mirrored across two separate locations) adds an extra layer of resilience.

IONOS uptime gauge

Performance results are more mixed. Page load speeds and server response times have been tested as competitive but not industry leading. In recent benchmarks, IONOS showed solid stability and acceptable speeds, but fell slightly behind providers like SiteGround and Hostinger in raw response time metrics. The uptime consistency, however, has remained strong even in tests where speed fluctuated.

For practical purposes, the performance is more than adequate for small to medium websites. If you are running a content heavy WordPress site with a global audience, you will want to enable the Cloudflare CDN that is included on the Plus and Ultimate plans to ensure consistent delivery speeds regardless of visitor location.

The underlying infrastructure uses redundant storage with data mirrored across two locations, which protects against hardware failures. IONOS does not publish detailed hardware specifications for shared hosting (you will not find them advertising specific processor models or NVMe details the way Hostinger does), but the server hardware is competent and the network connectivity is solid across both European and US data centres.

The IONOS Control Panel

IONOS uses its own custom control panel rather than the industry standard cPanel or Plesk. The panel is well organised and covers all the basics: domain management, email configuration, database setup, file manager, SSL management, DNS settings, and one click app installation.

Having used it extensively, I can say it is functional and reasonably intuitive once you get used to the layout. It is not as polished as Hostinger’s hPanel and it definitely does not have the familiarity of cPanel, but it gets the job done. The domain and DNS management section is particularly well implemented, which matters if you are managing multiple domains.

One thing I appreciate is that IONOS provides a clear overview of all your contracts and services in one place. This is useful when you have multiple products (hosting, domains, email, SSL certificates) under a single account. The billing section is transparent about what you are paying for and when each product renews.

The VPS and cloud products use separate management interfaces. VPS customers get access to a server management panel with power controls, console access, and firewall configuration. Cloud customers get the Data Center Designer, which is a visual infrastructure builder that is genuinely impressive for the price point.

Data Centre Locations

IONOS operates 10 data centres across 5 countries with over 90,000 servers in total:

Germany: Frankfurt (two locations) and Berlin. These are the primary European locations for shared hosting and serve as the backbone of IONOS’s infrastructure.

United Kingdom: London and Worcester. The Worcester facility is Tier IV certified and was upgraded in 2022 with rooftop solar panels.

Spain: Logroño. Available for VPS and dedicated servers.

France: Paris. Available for VPS hosting only.

United States : Las Vegas (Nevada), Newark (New Jersey), and Lenexa (Kansas). The Lenexa facility is IONOS owned and was recently expanded to support cloud products, with over 1,000 solar panels providing up to 20% of the site’s energy needs.

For shared hosting, the data centre location is assigned automatically (typically Germany) and cannot be changed. VPS, cloud, and dedicated server customers can choose their preferred location during setup and change it later if needed.

All data centres are ISO 27001 certified, use 100% renewable energy (either directly or through renewable energy certificates), and include physical security measures including dual factor access control, 24/7 camera monitoring, and fire suppression systems.

Customer Support

IONOS offers 24/7 customer support via phone and email, and has more recently added ticket based support through the control panel. Notably, phone support is available in multiple countries, including the US where it runs around the clock. This sets IONOS apart from competitors like Hostinger and Hetzner that do not offer phone support at all.

The quality of phone support is generally good. Agents are typically knowledgeable and can resolve common hosting issues efficiently. IONOS also assigns every customer a personal consultant, which is a named contact person you can reach for questions about your products and account. In practice, the personal consultant is more of a customer success contact than a technical support specialist, but it is a nice touch that adds a layer of personalised service unusual at this price point.

The IONOS Digital Guide is a comprehensive knowledge base with in depth articles covering hosting, domains, servers, email, online marketing, and more. The quality of the documentation is excellent and often goes beyond basic how to guides into genuinely useful technical explanations.

There is no live chat support, which is a notable gap in 2026 when most competitors offer it as standard. If you prefer instant messaging over phone calls, this could be a dealbreaker.

The Cancellation Problem

This is the part of the review where I need to be blunt, because it is my single biggest frustration with IONOS and something that every potential customer should know about before signing up.

To cancel a product with IONOS, you cannot simply click a button in the control panel. You are required to call their call centre to verify the cancellation. This applies to individual products within your account, not just to closing the entire account.

For a company that operates in 2026, this is inexcusable. Every other major hosting provider allows you to cancel services through the online dashboard. The phone call requirement feels like a deliberate retention tactic designed to discourage cancellations by adding friction to the process. It is the kind of practice that erodes trust, and it is particularly frustrating for European customers who may have to call during specific hours or deal with language barriers.

I want to be fair: the call centre agents are professional and will process your cancellation without aggressive pushback. But the fact that you have to make the call at all is a significant negative. It wastes your time, it feels disrespectful to the customer, and it is completely unnecessary when the alternative is a self service cancellation button that takes five seconds.

If IONOS changed nothing else about their service, fixing this one issue would immediately improve the customer experience and their reputation among the technical community, where this complaint comes up repeatedly.

Security Features

IONOS includes a solid security package across all hosting plans:

  • Free Wildcard SSL certificate on all plans
  • Daily backups with up to 6 days of retention
  • DDoS protection
  • DNSSEC support
  • Two factor authentication for account access
  • Georedundant data storage (data mirrored across two locations)
  • Anti spam and anti phishing protection

The Plus plan and above add Cloudflare CDN integration, and the Ultimate plan includes Site Scan malware protection. VPS and dedicated server customers have full control over their own security stack and can configure custom firewalls, install security software, and implement whatever hardening measures their setup requires.

For a budget hosting provider, the security offering is genuinely comprehensive. The Wildcard SSL in particular is generous, covering your main domain and all subdomains without additional cost. Many competitors only include a single domain SSL on entry plans.

Additional Products

IONOS offers a wide ecosystem of products beyond hosting:

Domain Registration: IONOS is one of the largest domain registrars in Europe. Pricing is competitive, with .com domains often available at promotional rates. Domain management through the control panel is straightforward and well integrated with hosting products.

Professional Email: Email hosting with custom domains, calendar sync, and spam filtering is included with hosting plans and available as a standalone product.

AI Website Builder: A drag and drop website builder with AI generated content and design suggestions. Included with hosting plans. It is functional for simple sites but limited compared to dedicated builders like Wix or Squarespace.

Online Store: E commerce tools integrated with shared hosting, including product management, payment processing, and inventory tracking.

Microsoft 365 and Google Workspace: Available as add ons for business email and productivity.

Server Backup: Acronis based backup solutions for servers and cloud instances.

Managed Kubernetes: Container orchestration for cloud customers.

Who Is IONOS Best For?

IONOS is a strong fit for:

  • Small to medium businesses wanting a one stop shop for hosting, domains, email, and online marketing
  • European businesses needing GDPR compliant hosting with German data centres
  • Budget conscious users who want a 12 month commitment rather than 48 months for good pricing
  • Phone support users who prefer calling over live chat
  • Users managing multiple domains who want everything under one account
  • WordPress site owners looking for managed hosting with CDN integration
  • Growing businesses that might eventually need VPS, dedicated, or cloud infrastructure without switching providers

IONOS is less ideal for:

  • Users who want complete self service account management (the phone cancellation requirement is a real issue)
  • Anyone who needs live chat support
  • Performance focused projects where every millisecond of response time matters
  • Users deeply familiar with cPanel who do not want to learn a new control panel
  • Developers looking for a raw, unmanaged cloud experience (Hetzner is better here)

Final Verdict

IONOS is a solid, well established hosting provider that offers genuine value for money, particularly for small and medium businesses in Europe and North America. The product range is enormous, the infrastructure is reliable, the security features are comprehensive for the price, and the 12 month contract length is far more reasonable than the multi year commitments required by many competitors.

The phone support and personal consultant are genuine differentiators in a market where many budget hosts offer nothing beyond live chat and a knowledge base. If you value being able to talk to a real person on the phone when something goes wrong, IONOS delivers on that promise.

But the cancellation process is a serious black mark. Having to call a call centre to cancel a product is a practice that belongs in a different era, and it creates an undercurrent of distrust that undermines the otherwise positive experience. Every time I need to cancel something with IONOS, I am reminded that this company makes it deliberately harder to leave than to join. That is not a good look.

Performance is respectable without being exceptional. If you need the absolute fastest shared hosting available, there are providers that will edge IONOS out in benchmark tests. But for the majority of use cases, the speed is more than adequate, the uptime is excellent, and the overall package of features, security, and support makes IONOS a competitive choice.

For European users in particular, the combination of German infrastructure, GDPR compliance, extensive European data centre coverage, and a well resourced parent company makes IONOS a dependable foundation for your web presence. Just be prepared for that phone call if you ever want to cancel something.
